There’s an almost bewildering array of options available to people who are shopping for kitchen cabinets. There is all wood, wood doors, wood veneers, imitation wood laminates, stainless steel and more. What you chose will depend on your taste and your budget. Solid wood cabinets are the most expensive. Down from that, you can chose to have solid wood cabinet doors, while the cabinet boxes are built from either particle board or some other cheap wood, and stained or given veneers to look the same.
If you love the look of real wood, and don’t like the thought of laminate cabinets which look a little like wood without being the real thing, but can’t afford the solid article, then wood veneers are a good option to consider. What a veneer is a thin slice of wood that is applied over the surface of the cabinets. Once again, it could be particle board or a cheap wood underneath. The veneer not only looks like real wood, it is real wood, and can be stained and treated as such. If you have cabinets with glass doors, the interior of those will be treated as well.
There are some advantages to choosing veneers over solid wood. For one thing, they tend to have a more even, uniform appearance. Sometimes solid wood does not look even at all, since the color and pattern or the grain varies quite a bit. For another, they are less susceptible to dryness and moisture. You don’t have to baby wood veneers the way you do solid wood. And, of course, they’re much cheaper. For the majority of people, wood veneer cabinets provide the best combination of appearance and price.
