Learning the History of New York
New York Bay was first discovered in 1524 by an Italian-born navigator named Giovanni da Verrazano. Henry Hudson, who was an Englishman, but employed by the Dutch, reached New York Bay in 1609 and then sailed up the river that is now named after him. It was the same year that northern New York was explored by Samuel de Champlain and then claimed for France. A few years after this, in 1624, the first permanent Dutch settlement was established at a place called Fort Orange, but is now known as Albany. Manhattan Island was purchased a year later from the Indians by Peter Minuit. He paid them with trinkets that were worth sixty Dutch guilders. Here he founded the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, but he had to surrender this location to the English in 1664. New Amsterdam then became New York City. New York had rapid commercial growth early on. At the time of this rapid growth, Governor De Witt Clinton was pushing forward the construction of the Erie Canal. The Erie Canal went from Buffalo to Albany and was opened in 1825. In present day New York, there are highways and super highways connecting one important city to another, connecting states and even connecting different countries. It is been made easy for the people of today to get across state borders as quickly as possible or to reach Canada as quickly as possible. If there is a center attraction to New York, it is New York City. It leads the state in manufacturing, commerce and banking, foreign trade, book and magazine publishing as well as theatrical productions. New York City is also home to a leading seaport and airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport. It is by far one of the busiest airports in the world. New York City is the home of the New York Stock Exchange, which is the largest stock exchange in the world. The largest manufacturing employer in this city is the printing and publishing industry. New York State's manufacturing is done. All along the Hudson River to Albany and other places, there are manufacturing hubs. In a way, this set up has given New York a second seacoast. New York ranks seventh in manufacturing with nearly six hundred thousand employees in 2005. The industries in New York have only grown since then.
